Stay Safe on 209Classified
Meet carefully
Use public, well-lit locations for local exchanges when practical. Consider daytime meetings and tell someone you trust where you are going. For higher-value items, consider a police-station safe-exchange area if available in your community.
Verify the item
Inspect an item before paying. Ask questions, request additional photos when needed, and independently verify serial numbers, titles, ownership documents, or other records where appropriate.
Use safer payments
Be cautious with gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, overpayment schemes, unusual payment requests, and anyone pressuring you to move quickly. The FTC provides consumer guidance on safer marketplace transactions.
Watch for scams
Be cautious of listings that are dramatically below market value, sellers who refuse reasonable verification, requests for codes or passwords, fake shipping notices, or payment instructions that do not make sense for the transaction.
Report problems
Use the report tools when available. Preserve relevant messages, listing URLs, screenshots, and transaction records. If you believe you have been defrauded or threatened, consider contacting the appropriate local law-enforcement agency and consumer-protection authority.
